How Character Counter Works

The tool reads the raw length of your text for the "with spaces" total, then strips every whitespace character to produce the "without spaces" total. It also checks your current length against a few common platform limits so you can see at a glance how much room remains.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Read the character counts in the result panel — updated live.
  3. Check the remaining-characters row to see how close you are to a 280-character limit.
  4. Select Clear to reset and start again.

Example

The text "Hello, world!" is 13 characters with spaces and 12 characters without spaces (one space is removed).

Helpful Tips

  • Character limits often include punctuation and emoji, not just letters — this counter treats every visible character equally.
  • If you're writing for SMS (160 characters) or a meta description (roughly 155-160 characters), watch the "without spaces" figure less and the total length more.
  • Line breaks count as one character each, so multi-line text will use up your limit faster than it might look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a character?
Every letter, number, punctuation mark, space and line break in your text counts as one character.
Why is the count without spaces lower?
Because it removes every space, tab and line break before counting, leaving only visible, non-whitespace characters.
Where does the 280 limit come from?
280 characters is the standard post length limit on X (formerly Twitter), which is why it's shown as a quick reference.
Does this count emoji correctly?
Most common emoji are counted as a single character here, though some complex emoji built from multiple code points may count as more than one, similar to how some platforms count them.
