How Time Calculator Works
Each duration is converted to a total number of seconds, added or subtracted, then converted back into hours, minutes and seconds — carrying over any minutes past 60 into hours, and seconds past 60 into minutes, so the result is always shown in its simplest form.
How to Use This Tool
- Choose whether to add or subtract the two durations.
- Enter the first duration in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Enter the second duration the same way.
- Select Calculate to see the combined result, normalized into hours, minutes and seconds.
Example
Addition: 2h 45m 30s + 1h 30m 45s = 4h 16m 15s. Subtraction: 5h 0m 0s − 1h 45m 30s = 3h 14m 30s.
Helpful Tips
- When subtracting, put the larger duration first — if the result would be negative, the tool will flag it rather than showing a nonsensical time.
- Use this for tasks like totaling work shifts, cooking or workout times, or figuring out remaining time on a countdown.
- You can leave any of the hours, minutes or seconds fields at 0 if a duration doesn't need that unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if the seconds or minutes I enter are 60 or more?
You can enter values of 60+ in any field — the calculator normalizes everything into total seconds first, so 90 minutes and 1 minute both work correctly in the input.
What if my subtraction would give a negative result?
The tool shows a clear error instead of a negative duration — swap the order of your durations, or use addition instead.
Can I use this to add more than two durations?
Not directly — calculate the sum of two durations first, then use that result as one of the inputs for a second calculation.
Does this account for days, like 25+ hours?
Yes, hours are not capped at 24 — a result of, say, 30 hours is shown as-is rather than wrapping into a day count.
