How Area Converter Works

The square meter is the base unit for area. A hectare is defined as exactly 10,000 square meters, and an acre works out to about 4,046.86 square meters, so your input is multiplied by its unit's factor to reach square meters, then divided by each other unit's factor to produce the full list of results.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the area value you want to convert.
  2. Select the unit it's currently measured in from the dropdown.
  3. Every other supported area unit is calculated automatically in the results box as you type.
  4. Select Reset to clear the field and start over.

Example

Converting 1 acre: 1 × 4,046.86 = 4,046.86 square meters, which equals about 0.404686 hectares (4,046.86 ÷ 10,000) and roughly 43,560 square feet (4,046.86 ÷ 0.092903).

Helpful Tips

  • Real estate listings often mix units by region — square feet is common in the US, square meters in most of the rest of the world, and acres or hectares for land parcels.
  • For very large areas like farmland or countries, square kilometers or square miles read far more naturally than square meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a hectare and an acre?
A hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters, while an acre is about 4,046.86 square meters — so one hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. Hectares are the standard in most metric countries; acres remain common in the US and UK for land measurement.
Why does square kilometer show so many decimal places?
A square kilometer represents a million square meters, so converting a small input into square kilometers produces a very small fractional number — extra decimal places keep that result from rounding down to zero.
Is a square foot the same everywhere?
Yes, the international foot (and therefore the square foot) is standardized at exactly 0.3048 meters, so square foot conversions are identical whether you're in the US, UK or elsewhere.
How is square mile useful for area conversions?
It's mainly used to describe very large regions such as cities, counties or countries in countries that still use imperial units for land area, similar to how square kilometers are used elsewhere.
